PHANTOM CINEMAS

ICS is proud to announce a partnership with PHANTOM GALLERIES LA, founded by Liza Simone to create PHANTOM CINEMAS.  The program will transform vacant storefronts and commercial real-estate into public movie theaters and new media galleries. Each “phantom cinema” will be a unique relationship between the participating Filmmaker, Curator, Property Owner and the Community that the cinema is in.  Cinemas will be curated by ICS staff & volunteers, local arts organizations, independent curators, and Los Angeles-based filmmakers.

The project will give local artists an opportunity to exhibit their work, while fostering economic development by drawing attention to available retail space.  In addition to exhibiting original film and new media art by local artists, programming will also include a variety of film and new media art from all over the world, new and old, obscure and popular, esoteric and mainstream.  Phantom Cinemas also will host discussion panels and Q&A sessions with artists whose work is being featured.  Local vendors will be invited to provide concessions for all Phantom Cinemas locations.  For a small donation, visitors can enjoy an entire evening filled with creative people, good food and drink, and great art.

The project will promote the creative communities of Los Angeles to a broader audience, and give them an affordable and communal opportunity to enjoy films not being shown in the multiplexes, and cutting-edge new media art. By pooling our resources we can create goodwill and a sense that Los Angeles is a single community booming with culture. These installations will generate a positive presence in the community, resulting in a unique marketing tool for properties to find permanent tenants.  Phantom Cinemas offers the participating property owner a tax-deductible donation of each location’s market value rent, through ICS’s non-profit status.

Artists, filmmakers, and property owners who are interested in participating in PHANTOM CINEMAS, should feel free to contact us!
